How to Work with Your Team

Two years ago, I was building a revenue organization from the ground up. I wanted to establish a modus operandi for the team that would attract the right candidates to our open roles and ensure that new hires had a great foundation upon which to build their careers in the organization, with which to work with one another, and importantly, to hold us accountable to doing our best work together.

This was originally a linkedin post, but I received such tremendous feedback, that I wanted to make sure it lived on here. Here were our five modus operandi.

🔨 Co-Founder Mentality - No one is coming to save you! We are a team, that means we have to support each other AND pull our own weight, so put on your co-founder hat & figure it out. Move the problem forward, be creative, find workarounds. Be customer obsessed. Don’t spend time doing dumb stuff that doesn’t move the needle. Call out patterns that show us where we need to improve. There’s no shame in asking for help.

☎️ Just Call - If you need help, get blocked, you need a buddy, or anything in between, just pick up the phone.

📚 Your Systems Define Your Success - You do not rise to the level of your goals, you fall to the level of your systems (James Clear). Spend time working in & on the biz. Spend time generating revenue instead of eating up cash. Spend time on the core work that moves the needle.

🎁 Radical Candor - You can (and are expected to) challenge directly while caring personally. We are all human, we’re going to make mistakes. When we do, we’re going to need to learn, iterate and improve… The only way we will do this is if we create a culture of openly sharing feedback directly with the person it is meant for. Zero tolerance for gossip, zero tolerance for a**holes. DO challenge directly, even when you feel vulnerable about doing so - this goes for your team, leadership & customers.

🏆No Excuses, Play like a Champion - We’re all adults, we know what success looks like, the goals are clear. NOW GO! The #1 thing that kills startups is lack of execution.
