Always Choose Adventure

Ronnie and I only have two rules in our relationship:

The first is “Call me when you get home,” so I know he’s safe and alive. The second—and maybe the more important one—is:

“Always choose adventure.”

It started years ago when our dear roommate moved out, and our once-lively apartment suddenly got very… quiet. Routine took over. One night, already in my sweats and about to settle into the couch, we got an invite to go out for the night, I was dragging my feet and Ronnie looked at me and said something I’ll never forget: “No good story started with, ‘And then we did what we always do.’” I begrudgingly changed clothes, and we ended up having the time of our lives.

Just like that, a new family rule was born.

“Always choose adventure” has taken us everywhere from dancing on bars in Paris to snowmobiling through Wyoming’s backcountry in search of a hot spring, and smoking “the fish whistle” with our charter captain off the coast of Venezuela. But some of the best adventures have happened right at home: choosing a puzzle over the TV, having a bonfire instead of staying in, or wearing headlamps to explore in the dark. The magic isn’t in going far or spending big—it’s in doing something different.

If you stay in your comfort zone too long, life starts to feel like a series of Tuesdays. My parents often ask, “When’s the last time you did something for the first time?” Choosing adventure is how we answer that.

That’s why this week’s selection of recipes is dedicated to the adventurous. These recipes take more time. They’re messier. They’re best made with a partner in crime. But what you’ll get is more than a meal—

You’ll get a story. A giggle. A memory.

So here’s to earning your dinner.

Here’s to trying something new.

Here’s to always choosing adventure.
