The Most Important Question to Ask Yourself when Making a Career Move with Sarah Jahnke

Sarah Jahnke is the CEO and Co-Founder of Homecourt, alongside Courteney Cox. Yes, Monica from Friends.

We sat down with her on the pod a while back and I thought something she said was really important to relay to others as it relates to how to think about your career.

We were talking about her decision to leave L’Oreal and go work on Homecourt… She’d never founded a company before, she’d never raised capital before, she’d never even worked in startups before, and upon sharing all of these concerns with a mentor of hers, he said one thing that changed the game for her:

“Go where you’ll learn the most.”

Now, this might seem counter-intuitive to what we often seek in our careers when we make a move: more money, more title, more security, more influence, etc. but what I think is important to hear in this advice is that once we’ve achieved a baseline level of security in our careers (meaning financially we have our bases covered), part of, and maybe the most important factor to consider is how our our career is actually going to force us to learn, grow, evolve, and become, even when that process is challenging, even when that requires us to do things that make us uncomfortable, feel exposed, or feel like an imposter.

So next time you’re contemplating a career move, ask yourself this one question: Where will I learn the most?

Did you enjoy Sarah’s recipe for success? Then you will probably love her favorite dish, inspired by her go-to spot in Venice, CA where she lives and runs Homecourt.
